Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 7/24/21: Twenty One Pilots holds at No. 1; Olivia Rodrigo jumps

Milky Chance

Another week at No. 1 for Twenty One Pilots and their disco jam “Saturday” on the Alt18 Countdown. Glass Animals holds at No. 2 with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.”

I missed the last two weeks traveling, so not sure who is new or who jumped around the countdown, but Olivia Rodrigo is up to No. 5 with “brutal,” while WILLOW and Travis Barker have a bop with the SEO-unfriendly “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l.” SEB also has something going with “seaside_demo,” which has 38.6 million plays on Spotify, to date. He can’t thank TikTok and Harry Styles for the boost.

I didn’t catch the name of the new SEB track at No. 17. If you know it, email me here.

Keeping things short this week with the new countdown less than 24 hours away. I’ll swing back and report on the 7/17/21 countdown so we have a full record for the year.

Playlist links below. I’m back and active on the Discord here.

Sorry again for being away. I meant to keep things updated, but it was just too nice out in the woods. Back at it now.

Update: I have a new Spotify playlist called “AltCharts” featuring alternative music from popular charts. You can follow it here.

Alt18 Countdown Rewind 7/13/13: Atlas Genius, Bastille and Lorde all on the list

Atlas Genius in 2013

Eight years ago, Atlas Genius led the Alt18 Countdown with “If So.” The song spent three of four weeks at No. 1 before giving way to Bastille and “Pompeii.”

Daft Punk and “Get Lucky” dropped off the Alt18 this week even as it went on to “song of the summer” status. The 1975 and “Chocolate” also dropped off, and never got higher than No. 6 on the Alt18. I would have guessed it reached No. 1.

Smallpools and “Dreaming” did hit No. 1 on the Alt18 — in October 2013.

What happened to Ms Mr? “Hurricane” was a big song and made the year-end Alt36 for 2013, but the duo only put out one more album and went on hiatus in 2017.

Kodaline continues to release music, but hasn’t recaptured the success of “All I Want.” And The Ceremonies had a great song with “Land of Gathering,” but the brother band couldn’t build on the hit.

Lorde appears here with “Royals” and is on the current Alt18 with “Solar Power.” Bastille is the other current crossover with “Distorted Light Beam.”

Alt18 Countdown – July 13, 2013

1. Atlas Genius – If So

2. Bastille – Pompeii

3. Kodaline – All I Want

4. Grouplove – Ways to Go

5. Cold War Kids – Miracle Mile

6. Vampire Weekend – Diane Young

7. Phoenix – Trying to be Cool

8. Smallpools – Dreaming

9. Nine Inch Nails – Came Back Haunted

10. Ms Mr – Hurricane

11. AWOLNATION – Thiskidsnotalright

12. Franz Ferdinand – Right Action

13. Local Natives – Heavy Feet

14. Fitz & The Tantrums – Out of My League

15. Foals – My Number

16. The Ceremonies – Land of Gathering

17. Avicii/Aloe Blacc – Wake Me Up

18. Lorde – Royals

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 7/10/21: Japanese Breakfast joins; Manchester Orchestra departs

Bastille

On a quiet week for the Alt18 Countdown, it’s the song not on the list that’s the biggest news.

“Bed Head” by Manchester Orchestra drops off the countdown after it’s lengthy run, including several weeks as the No. 1 song. The song joined the countdown on March 20 at No. 4 and hung around for nearly 4 months. In honor of its run, here’s a recently released Local Natives remix of “Bed Head.” I wonder if Bed Head’s departure is clearing the way for “Telepath” off “The Million Masks of God” to make an Alt18 appearance.

One song not quite ready to move down the chart is “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.” The Glass Animals’ hit spent a sixth week at No. 1 on the countdown. Twenty One Pilots follow with “Saturday” and then The Band CAMINO’s “1 Last Cigarette” at No. 3.

The only new new song on the Alt18 this week comes from Japanese Breakfast. “Be Sweet” joins at No. 18, and based on AltNation and XMU playtime, could be around for a while.

OCTAVIO the Dweeb and Cannons are the other two bands to leave the countdown this week. Both could easily return, like All Time Low and The Neighbourhood did this week.

Lorde on the Alt18 Countdown

Running late this holiday week. Thanks to “imboosted” for posting the Alt18 in the Finding Alt18 Discord.

Milky Chance, Olivia Rodrigo, and KennyHoopla with Travis Barker are new this week, while Holly Humberstone and Saint Motel return after a week off. To make room, Black Pumas, Briston Maroney, The Neighbourhood, Billie Eilish, and All Time Low all departed.

Glass Animals continue their run at No. 1 with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” while CHVRCHES lurk at No. 2 with “He Said, She Said.” Watch Lorde’s “Solar Power” rising to No. 8 as a contender for the top spot.

As always, thank you for reading. We’ll keep posting the countdowns and writing posts about the bands. I’m also starting to dabble with bringing attention to indie-bands that haven’t gotten a lot of attention. If you know a song or performer we should hear, let us know.

Saint Motel band photo
Saint Motel (Photo/Atlantic Records/Jabari)

Topsy-turvy week on the Alt18 Countdown with seven new or returning songs joining the list and knocking off a stalwart of 2021. No change at the top, though.

New Alt18 bands this week include: OCTAVIO the Dweeb, Vance Joy, and Holly Humberstone. Returning from past countdowns include: Joywave, Briston Maroney, Coldplay, and Saint Motel.

All of those additions kicked off Joywave and “After Coffee,” Alice Merton and “Vertigo,” Billie Eilish and “Your Power,” The Band CAMINO and “1 Last Cigarette,” Cannons and “Bad Dream,” and The Neighbourhood and “Stargazing.”

This is the first countdown without “Stargazing” in nearly 6 months. The Neighbourhood anthem joined the Alt18 on Jan. 23 and spent time at No. 1.

Glass Animals repeat this week at No. 1 with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.”

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 6/12/21: Olivia Rodrigo is in the building; Glass Animals repeat

The Band CAMINO

Glass Animals continue their 1+ year of dominance of the Alt18 Countdown with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” repeating at No. 1.

As Finding Alt18 reader Matt McCall pointed out in our Discord:

It’s finally the “middle of June” (as Glass Animals sing in Heat Waves), defined as June 11th through 20th. The song debuted on the July 18, 2020 Alt18 as a Summer 2020 song. Nearly a year later, the track sits at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on both Top 40 and Alternative radio airplay. (It’s considered a recurrent on Alt radio but would be #15 if not.)

Matt McCall

Another called shot from our Discord: Olivia Rodrigo joined the Alt18 with “good 4 u” debuting at No. 16. The song is already a mega-global hit with No. 1’s in several countries and 321 million plays so far on Spotify. As Madison pointed out: It’s an alt-rock banger, and a strong contender for song of the summer. (Seriously, join the Discord.)

I could see Olivia jump to No. 1, but Modest Mouse may get there first with “We Are Between,” which jumped to No. 3.

Beabadoobee is back on theAlt18 with “Last Day on Earth,” while Billie Eilish’s “Your Power” and Bleachers “Stop Making It Hurt” are back.

Blu DeTiger, Saint Motel, Twin XL, and Coldplay drop off. “Sticky” by The Maine was “No. 19,” according to Justin Kade’s show intro.

Vampire Weekend led the Alt18 Countdown 11 years ago this week.

Lesser known songs (at least to me) from A Silent Film, Civil Twilight, Semi-Precious Weapons and The Constellations round out the countdown.

Here’s the full countdown. Special thanks to Doug Dollison for sharing the countdown.

  • Alice Merton, Vertigo
  • Billie Eilish, Your Power
  • Weezer/AJR, All My Favorite Songs

New to the countdown:

Briston Maroney and Bottle Rocket, which has ties to Manchester Orchestra.

Saint Motel also cracks the Alt18 with “It’s Happening.”

Cannons are back with “Bad Dream,” as is Sir Sly with “Welcomes the Pressure,” Coldplay and “Higher Power,” and Twin XL’s “Slow Heart.”

Meet Briston Maroney: His ‘Bottle Rocket’ joined the Alt18 Countdown

Briston Maroney is on the Alt18 Countdown
Briston Maroney

Briston Maroney is a Knoxville, Tenn.-based singer songwriter whose song, “Bottle Rocket,” debuted on the Alt18 Countdown on June 5, 2021. He’s connected to Manchester Orchestra through Andy Hull, Robert McDowell and producer John Congleton.

The Lines of Best Fit profiled Maroney in March 2021. Here’s a quote from the profile by Tyler Damara Kelly: “I remember finding a Rage Against The Machine record next to The White Album. I picked out the Rage one and was like: this scares me! The White Album looked a lot more pleasant so I took that one, and I sat there and listened to both discs when I was 11. I think that literally shaped why things in the world confuse me.”

Here’s another profile in The Emory Wheel by China Dennington, and a feature on Ladygunn.

Maroney’s first break came through the American Idol audition process, gaining attention for his rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” He was one of the 30 semifinalists in 13th season but didn’t advance further.

Maroney bounced around the U.S. as a teenager, briefly entering rehab and then settling back in Knoxville with a commitment to music as a career.

Maroney had a hit in 2018 with “Freaking Out the Interstate,” which has topped 66 million plays on Spotify.

He currently as fall tour dates with Mt. Joy. Here’s the calendar: Briston Maroney 2021 Tour Dates

‘Bottle Rocket’

“Bottle Rocket,” off of Maroney’s “Sunflower” album, joined the Alt18 Countdown at No. 18. The same week Audacy made it their “Alternative Pick of the Week.”

The personal lyrics seem to be about Maroney realizing he could take control of his life. From the chorus:

“Come to find I’m the one that will decide my life/
It just takes a little time/
It’s a bottle rocket”

Briston Maroney, “Bottle Rocket”

Full lyrics on Genius here.

Manchester Orchestra lead singer Hull and lead guitarist McDowell get writing credits on the song. Of course, they’re also on Alt18 No. 1 song “Bed Head.” Congleton, who has produced Manchester Orchestra and many, many other major acts, produced the song.
