Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 2/27/21: grandson repeats, The Knocks jump and Dayglow joins

carolesdaughter

Steady as she goes on this week’s Alt17 Countdown on Sirius XM. We saw new songs from Dayglow (Close To You), AJR (Way Less Sad), and Manchester Orchestra (Bed Head), and said adieu to MISSIO (Can You Feel the Sun), BENEE (Happen to Me), and Machine Gun Kelly’s (ex’s best friend). nothing, nowhere returned to the countdown with Fake Friend.

grandson repeats at No. 1 with Dirty, and The Knocks with Foster the People say a nice jump to No. 3. Foo Fighters and Weezer hung around, and Gus Dapperton kept his Alt18 run going with Medicine.

This week is the first time we didn’t hear MISSIO on the Countdown since Oct. 24, 2020. That leaves All About You as the longest-tenured song on the countdown — and the countdown has moved entirely into 2021.

Along with this blog, here’s a few channels I’m keeping updated:

Cheers!

Alt18 Countdown, 2/20/21

18. Dayglow, Close To You (new)
Madison predicted this song will make it to No. 1. Atwood Magazine goes deep on the song.

17. The Killers, C’est La Vie
Last week on the #Adjacent18 we linked this one to early Talking Heads. Check it out for yourself — it’s spot on.

16. AJR, Way Less Sad (new)
It’s almost not an Alt18 Countdown these days without AJR. You’ll find this on their upcoming album, OK ORCHESTRA. Another play on Radiohead’s classic. Weezer’s new album is OK Human.

15. Manchester Orchestra, Bed Head (new)

14. benny blanco, Marshmello, Vance Joy, You
Billboard calls this one a “folk-meets-the-dance-floor tune.”

13. Frances Forever, Space Girl
The caller introduction voted for this song because LGBTQ representation matters — and because it’s a great song. Truth on both.

12. nothing,nowhere, Fake Friend
N,N creator Joe Mulherin collaborated with fellow countdown mate KennyHoopla on blood.

11. The Happy Fits, Hold Me Down
Calvin Langman linked this song to fellow New Jersey rockers Sonic Blume.

10. carolesdaughter, Violent
Thea Taylor found her stage name in rehab after realizing how often she talked about her mom, Carole.

9. The Backseat Lovers, Kilby Girl
The caller introducing this song connected to the Kilby Court, the longest-running all-ages concert venue in Salt Lake City.

8. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
Travis Barker is going to be around a long time working with acts like KennyHoopla, Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd.

7. Weezer, All My Favorite Songs
Weezer committed to full analog for their new album, OK Human, including a full orchestra. It’s good to be Weezer.

6. The Neighbourhood, Stargazing
Jaden Smith, Mac Demarco, Lana Del Rey and Alexa Demie all cameo in this song’s video.

5. Kings of Leon, The Bandit
The Bandit hit No. 1 on the Billboard adult alternative chart on Feb. 20.

4. Gus Dapperton, Medicine
GD wrote and produced this song with Spike Stent, a legendary producer and mix engineer who has worked with seemingly every major recording artist over the past 30 years. Seriously, Google him.

3. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You

2. Foo Fighters, Waiting on a War

1. grandson, Dirty

The Killers “C’est La Vie” calls to mind early Talking Heads. #Adjacent18

The Adjacent18 is a playlist inspired by the Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM’s AltNation. We take each track on the weekly countdown and dig to find interesting adjacencies. Follow the Adjacent18 Spotify playlist here. See the Feb. 20, 2021 Alt18 Countdown here.

Adjacent18: Songs adjacent to the Alt18 Countdown, Feb. 20, 2021

18. Childish Gambino – Redbone
Foushee sang Redbone during her blind audition for The Voice. She later became an uncredited TikTok star with “Deep End,” which was No. 18 on the Alt18 Countdown this week.

17. Juice WRLD (with benny blanco) – Real Shit
So many possible adjacencies for the benny blanco, Marshmello, Vance Joy collab You, which made the Alt18 this week. I went down a benny blanco rabbit hole and landed on this 2020 tune with Juice Wrld.

16. Radiohead – Weird Fishes / Arpeggi
Stereogram linked BENEE’s Happen to Me to the Radiohead song Weird Fishes / Arpeggi after her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in November.

15. Dark Waves – I Don’t Wanna Be In Love
Dark Waves gets a writing credit on the KennyHoopla/Travis Barker song ESTELLA//.

14. Travis Scott – STARGAZING
Travis Scott kicked off ASTROWORLD with STARGAZING, which is also the lead track on The Neighbourhood’s album, Chip Chrome & The MonoTones.

13. The Knocks – Ride or Die (feat. Foster the People)
The Knocks and Foster the People are on the current Alt18 with “All About You.” Here’s their 2018 hit “Ride or Die.”

12. The Paper Kites – Willow Tree March
I love MISSIO’s opening line, “Below the willow tree” on Can You Feel the Sun. A search for “willow tree” on Spotify found this 2013 track from The Paper Kites off their Woodland EP.

11. carolesdaughter – PORCELAIN JESUS
Reading about carolesdaughter, the SoundCloud artist who hit it big on TikTok, and now the Alt18, with “Violent,” she talked about rap as a major influence on her work. Here’s her own rap song.

10. Trippie Redd – PILL BREAKER (feat. blackbear, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker)
Trippie Redd joins the MGK, blackbear and Travis Barker universe with the lead track on the Barker-produced album, “Pegasus: Neon Shark vs Pegasus Presented by Travis Barker.”

9. Talking Heads – New Feeling
Daniel Kreps at Rolling Stone described The Killers “C’est La Vie” as a take on the early half of the Talking Heads catalog. I checked it out and, yeah, that’s pretty accurate.

8. Neon Trees – Everybody Talks
The Backseat Lovers are based in Salt Lake City. The Neon Trees started in nearby Provo.

7. Mitski – Francis Forever
Frances Forever found her stage name in this incredible Mitski song.

6. Julien Baker – Red Door
Kings of Leon’s The Band includes the line, “And the red door/it seems to sway.” Here is Julien Baker’s take on a red door, and some analysis on Genius about the shared allusion.

5. Sonic Blume – Sunflower Bean
The Happy Fits cellist Calvin Langman told Broadway World he was inspired by fellow New Jersey-based Sonic Blume when he wrote Hold Me Down.

4. Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2
My favorite line from Foo Fighters’ Waiting on a War is Dave Grohl singing “fell in love with a voice on the radio.” I tried finding out who he was talking about, but couldn’t find it. Instead, I went to 1980 when Grohl was 11 — the same age as his daughter who inspired the song. Maybe Pink Floyd’s anthem for youth rebellion contributed to Grohl’s own call for action.

3. Bjork – Joga
Spike Stent is the connection here with Gus Dapperton’s Medicine. Dapperton wrote and produced the song with the legendary Stent, who was worked with virtually every major performing artist over the past 40 years, including Bjork on, Homogenic.

2. Bastille – Million Pieces (with the Chamber Orchestra of London)
Weezer worked with a 38-piece orchestra on their new OK Human album, so here’s one of Bastille’s latest with the Chamber Orchestra of London.

  1. 1. Rage Against the Machine – Guerilla Radio
Someone described grandson as a “millennial Rage Against Machine.” I don’t think that’s fair to anyone involved, but we’ll go with it. grandon won’t mind ending a little dirty.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 2/20/21: Weezer returns at No. 2; Gus Dapperton eyes top spot, but grandson holds

Hello, Weezer.

Some volatility on the Alt18 this week with Weezer jumping back in at No. 2 with “All My Favorite Songs” and countdown stalwarts Tame Impala and Bastille dropping off. Still, grandson held at No. 1 with “Dirty” and the Foo Fighters are right in the mix with “Waiting on a War.”

Foushee returned to the Alt18 this week with “Deep End,” and the wild benny blanco/Marshmello/Vance Joy collab “You” joined at No. 17. KennyHoopla is back with buddy Travis Barker and their “ESTELLA,” and a new band to me, carolesdaughter debuted at No. 11 with “Violent.”

Also leaving this week: Royal Blood’s “Trouble Coming,” broken people’s “almost monday,” Sir Sly’s “Material Boy” and Holly Humberstone’s “Falling Asleep at the Wheel.” It’s the first time Sir Sly and Tame are off the countdown since Oct. 4, 2020. MISSIO now holds the longest stay with “Can You Feel the Sun,” which has been on since Oct. 24.

Here’s the updated Spotify playlist.

15. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
KennyHoopla works out of Wisconsin.

14. The Neighbourhood, Stargazing

13. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You
It’s hold at No. 13 for this collab, which produced “Ride or Die” in 2018.

11. carolesdaughter, Violent

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 2/13/21: grandson, Gus Dapperton at the top; Frances Forever at No. 5

BENEE by Bruce Baker, Creative Commons

Frances Forever joins the countdown at No. 5 with “Space Girl,” a nice bop with some top spot potential. Gus Dapperton reaches No. 2 with “Medicine.” Here’s his take on the song from DIY mag:

“this track defines the album most explicitly,” he explains. “i wrote it as a song that would narrate my life. medicine is about someone who is self destructive so that they can get high off of the process of healing. the hurting phase is of no concern to them. +++”

Gus Dapperton in DIY mag

Kings of Leon are back this week with “The Bandit” as they roll out their first new album in four years. Looking for “Echoing” on the Alt18 in a few months. almost monday is also back with “Broken People,” a song that could jump into the Top 10 next week or fall off all together. Same for The Neighbourhood and “Stargazing.” Who knows how these things work.

Always happy to see BENEE on the countdown. She’s at No. 18 with “Happen to Me.” And loving everything grandson is doing these days. It’s a well-deserved No. 1 for “Dirty.” Listen to the words everyone!

Disappointed to see Mishaal’s “Peddle Bike” drop off, and “Guillotine” by Mansionair and NoMBe continues it’s on-again, off-again (now off) relationship with the countdown. Inhaler and “When It Break” is also gone — for now.

Checkout the full countdown below, plus each band’s hometown according to Wikipedia.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 2/6/21: grandson reaches No. 1, The Killers are back, and Foushee joins

Mishaal is at No. 12 on the Alt18 Countdown with Peddle Bike.

The Alt18 Countdown gets “Dirty” this week with grandson taking the top spot from MISSIO, whose “Can You Feel the Sun” falls to No. 2. The Killers made the week’s strongest debut with, “C’est La Vie,” at No. 4. Foo Fighters and Weezer seem to be settling into the list, and Mishaal is hanging around around for another week with “Peddle Bike.” There’s a lot of fan support on Twitter for The Happy Fits, and their song came in at No. 13.

Dropping off this week: “broken people” by almost monday, “Falling Asleep at the Wheel” by Holly Humberstone, “Medicine” by Gus Dapperton and “Leave Me Alone” by iDKHOW. Humberstone had been on consecutive countdowns since Nov. 2, and iDKHOW since Nov. 15.

Trying a new thing this week highlighting lyrics from each of the songs. There’s some beautiful writing on the countdown right now, so thought it’d be nice to pull out a sampling of the writing. As always, the updated Spotify playlist is below.

Alternative music charts, January 30, 2021 | Billie Eilish, AJR, Olivia Rodrigo top lists

Michael Franti and Spearhead top the Roots Music Report this week.

We follow the #Alt18, but here are more charts we’re watching for the best an new alternative music. Know a list I’m missing? Hit me up in the comments, on Twitter or at: findingalt18@gmail.com

Alternative Music Charts

Billboard Alternative Music Chart: #1 – Billie Eilish, Therefore I am | Spotify playlist

New Alternative 40 Chart: My personal favorite Spotify playlist. Description says it’s pulled from 50 new indie and alternative sources each week. Often lines up with the Download 15 on Sirius XMU.

Download 15: Speaking of the DL15, here’s a Spotify playlist organized by Clint Smith.

Muzooka: Alt music chart used by iHeartRadio and USA Today. Grandson was bragging about cracking the Top 10 this week, so it means something to artists.

Roots Music Report: New one for me, but I just started paying attention to these things. Michael Franti is at No. 1 this week. Interesting list this week.

iTunesChart: Genre chart from iTunes has AJR’s “Bang” at No. 1 this week. New Weezer is up there, too.

Official Charts: UK-based alt and rock chart.

Amazon Best Sellers: Wild list that includes Green Day’s “Dookie” and Foo Fighters’ “Greatest Hits.” Taylor Swift is No. 1, though.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 1/30/21: Weezer and The Neighbourhood join; The Happy Fits jump

The Happy Fits are No. 7 with “Hold Me Down.”

Rock royalty in the form of Weezer and Foo Fighters join the Alt18 Countdown on SiriusXM’s AltNation this week with two solid new additions to anthems of alternative rock, but it may be “Stargazing” by The Neighbourhood with the strongest debut. The Knocks collab with Foster the People is storming to No. 1 with “All About You.” For now it’ll have to settle at No. 2, because it’s MISSIO back up top with “Can You Feel the Sun?”

CORRECTION: Foo Fighters’ “Waiting on the War” join the 1/23/21 countdown. That’s what I get for skipping a week.

For anyone relying on this site and social accounts (@findingalt18) to track the countdown, apologies for missing a week. I’ll circle back on the 1/23/21 countdown so we can keep a running tally of 2021, but for now I’m just getting caught back up.

I’d love your thoughts on the countdown and any alt music you’re into these days. I’m going to mix in the Download15’s and some Spotify playlists I’m following, so open to any and all ideas. Maybe I can land a band interview this year. Happy February, all!

The Knocks

A belated recap of the Jan. 16, 2021 Alt18 Countdown. Apologies everyone! Kings of Leon join this week and Jake Bugg, Mishaal and grandson all return. They kicked off Almost Monday, Royal Blood, Bleachers and Bruce Springsteen and Billie Eilish.

It was just one week at No. 1 for Sir Sly and “Material Boy,” which slipped to No. 6. MISSIO returned the top spot with “Can You Feel the Sun.” Bastille, Tame Impala, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me and Mansionair with NoMBe round out the Top 5.

Siriux XM Alt 18 Countdown of alternative music, Jan. 9, 2021 | Sir Sly at No. 1; Almost Monday joins with ‘Broken People’

Inhaler looking cool.

Almost Monday joined the Alt18 this week with “Broken People,” which was released in October 2019 and has already racked up millions of plays on the different platforms. Clairo returns to the Alt18 with “Sofia,” and Ashe’s “Save Me” is other new addition this week. That sends Mishaal’s “Peddle Bike,” the Foo Fighters “Shame, Shame” and grandson’s “Dirty” off the countdown. With all that change over, Sir Sly is left on top with “Material Boy.”
