Alt18 Rewind, 6/5/2010: Vampire Weekend gives up the gun; Black Keys, Silversun Pickups on the countdown

The Heavy were No. 2 on 6/5/11 Alt18 Countdown.

Vampire Weekend led the Alt18 Countdown 11 years ago this week.

The indie darlings hit No. 1 with “Giving Up the Gun,” a song that spent six years on top of the Alt18 before giving way to The Black Keys’ “Tighten Up.” It replaced the Silversun Pickups’ “The Royal We.”

Other notable songs: The Heavy reached No. 2 with “How You Like Me Now?”, while Cage the Elephant, Muse, The Dead Weather and LCD Soundsystem make appearances.

Lesser known songs (at least to me) from A Silent Film, Civil Twilight, Semi-Precious Weapons and The Constellations round out the countdown.

Here’s the full countdown. Special thanks to Doug Dollison for sharing the countdown.

Meet Briston Maroney: His ‘Bottle Rocket’ joined the Alt18 Countdown

Briston Maroney

Briston Maroney is a Knoxville, Tenn.-based singer songwriter whose song, “Bottle Rocket,” debuted on the Alt18 Countdown on June 5, 2021. He’s connected to Manchester Orchestra through Andy Hull, Robert McDowell and producer John Congleton.

The Lines of Best Fit profiled Maroney in March 2021. Here’s a quote from the profile by Tyler Damara Kelly: “I remember finding a Rage Against The Machine record next to The White Album. I picked out the Rage one and was like: this scares me! The White Album looked a lot more pleasant so I took that one, and I sat there and listened to both discs when I was 11. I think that literally shaped why things in the world confuse me.”

Here’s another profile in The Emory Wheel by China Dennington, and a feature on Ladygunn.

Maroney’s first break came through the American Idol audition process, gaining attention for his rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” He was one of the 30 semifinalists in 13th season but didn’t advance further.

Maroney bounced around the U.S. as a teenager, briefly entering rehab and then settling back in Knoxville with a commitment to music as a career.

Maroney had a hit in 2018 with “Freaking Out the Interstate,” which has topped 66 million plays on Spotify.

He currently as fall tour dates with Mt. Joy. Here’s the calendar: Briston Maroney 2021 Tour Dates

‘Bottle Rocket’

“Bottle Rocket,” off of Maroney’s “Sunflower” album, joined the Alt18 Countdown at No. 18. The same week Audacy made it their “Alternative Pick of the Week.”

The personal lyrics seem to be about Maroney realizing he could take control of his life. From the chorus:

“Come to find I’m the one that will decide my life/
It just takes a little time/
It’s a bottle rocket”

Briston Maroney, “Bottle Rocket”

Full lyrics on Genius here.

Manchester Orchestra lead singer Hull and lead guitarist McDowell get writing credits on the song. Of course, they’re also on Alt18 No. 1 song “Bed Head.” Congleton, who has produced Manchester Orchestra and many, many other major acts, produced the song.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 5/8/21: Twenty One Pilots is the new No. 1; Billie Eilish and Royal Blood return

Joywave

We have a new No. 1! Not surprisingly, Twenty One Pilots jumped up one to flop spots with Manchester Orchestra on the Alt18 Countdown.

Weezer, All Time Low, The Backseat Lovers and Alice Merton dropped off the countdown this week. One of the AltNation DJs said Merton’s “Vertigo” was No. 19 this week, so maybe it returns next week.

I got in some trouble from Spotify this week for posting the Alt18 Countdown playlist. It’d gone over 1,000 followers and that probably didn’t sit well with our friends at AltNation. The good news is they’ve started uploading the playlist on Pandora. It’s slower to update, but what can you do? (And no hard feelings. AltNation is part of a paid subscription so posting their list outside of the paywall is bad for business. Sorry about that, AltNation friends!)

CHVRCHES. Photo by Sebastian Mlynarski and Kevin J. Thomson

We’re in a groove right now with the Top 4 in the Alt18 Countdown.

Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” took the No. 1 spot for another week, followed by Twenty One Pilots and “Shy Away” at No. 2, The Neighbourhood with “Stargazing” at No. 3, and girl in red with “Serotonin.” Manchester Orchestra (“Telepath”) and TOP (“Choker”) have new new songs out, so both appear ready to settle in for lengthy stays on the countdown.

Glass Animals, kings of the 2020 Alt18, jumped to No. 5 this week with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” and AJR rolls on at No. 6 with “Way Less Sad.”

Two new songs joined the countdown this week: Joywave with “After Coffee” at the revolving door of No. 18, and Alice Merton with the strong debut at No. 11 with “Vertigo.” I’d bet on Merton putting down some roots in the countdown with her new earworm.

Weezer hangs on for another week with “All My Favorite Songs” at No. 9, and they’re readying for another single with the very Weezer-sounding “I Need Some of That.”

(All of these songs have me thinking about another post this week called the “Next18” featuring what’s next from our favorite Alt18 bands. I’m tinkering with another idea where we create our own alternative music countdown using a mix of existing lists and audience votes. We’ll see.)

The other new song this week is an Alt18 oldie. “Kilby Girl” by The Backseat Lovers returned for at least a week at No. 13. The three new songs knocked off carolesdaughter, Adam Melchor, and TWIN XL.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/24/21: Twin XL, Glass Animals among four new bands on this week’s countdown

TWIN XL

What a week! Four brand new songs, plus two old songs returning, to knock off some stalwarts on the Alt18 Countdowns this week.

Adam Melchor, Twin XL, Chvrches, and Glass Animals all join the countdown, while carolesdaughter and Mike Shinoda, iann dior and UPSAHL return. Those six knocked former No. 1’s “Dirty” by Grandson and “All About You” by The Knocks and Foster the People. Also dropping off: “Deadline” by Grouplove, “The Bandit” by Kings of Leon, “4Runner” by Rostam and “Waiting on a War” by Foo Fighters.

It all amounts to a big week of turnover, though nothing changed at the top. Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” continue to roll, while Twenty One Pilots wait their turn and The Neighbourhood round out the Top 3.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/17/21: Manchester Orchestra back on top; Twenty One Pilots jump 13

All Time Low

No. 2 with a bullet this week for Twenty One Pilots, who are wasting no time flexing their way up the countdown with “Shy Away.” The latest from Tyler Joseph and Nick Thomas jumped 13 spots this week and seems ready to dig in for a lengthy stay on the Alt18 Countdown.

For now, Manchester Orchestra holds the top spot with “Bed Head.” It’s a return to No. 1 for the Atlanta-based band led by Andy Hull. They’d lost No. 1 to The Neighbourhood last week.

New new to the countdown this week is Rostam with the excellent “4Runner.” Returning to the countdown after some time off is Blu DeTiger with “Vintage” and The Band CAMINO with two missed calls and “1 Last Cigarette.” They replace carolesdaughter, Gus Dapperton and Mike Shinoda, et al.

The longest running song on the countdown is now “All About You” by The Knocks and Foster the People. I love the lyrics on this song:

Days, they can feel so long
I’ve been hangin’ on to a sad love song
Nights never came to dawn
They went on and on
When you pulled me out

And before I knew it
I became all about you

The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You

grandson is next with “Dirty.” I’m hoping he can pull a Glass Animals and swap the banger “Death of an Optimist” into the Alt18 for “Dirty,” but we’ll see if he has that kind of pull.

What’s your favorite song on the countdown these days? Any bands we should all know about? Share them in the comments or email: finding.alt18@gmail.com

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/10/21: The Neighbourhood reaches No. 1; Twenty One Pilots and All Time Low join

Imagine Dragons

The climb is complete for The Neighbourhood and “Stargazing,” which is the new No. 1 on the Alt18 Countdown. ChipTone and crew knocked off Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” for the weekly title. The Knocks and Foster the People round out the Top 3 with “All ABout You.”

Two new songs on the Alt18 this week. Twenty One Pilots joins with “Shy Away” at No. 15, and All Time Low is back with “Once in a Lifetime.” The knocked off Blu DeTiger’s “Vintage” and Dayglow’s “Close to You.”

The Happy Fits jumped up to No. 4 and seem poised to reach No. 1, though girl in red is getting a lot of attention with “Serotonin.” Either is going to have hold off rising hits from TOP and Grouplove. We’ll see as this turnover phase continues for the countdown.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/3/21: Blu DeTiger returns; Manchester Orchestra repeates; Kilby Girl departs

Grouplove. Photo credit: Jimmy Fontaine

It’s over, it’s all over for the mighty Kilby Girl by The Backseat Lovers. The last 2020 Alt18 Countdown song fell off the list this week after 18 consecutive weeks. Great run by a great song; looking forward to the Salt Lake City band’s followup.

Lots of turnover on this week’s Alt18. Blu DeTiger and Mike Shinoda with iann dior and UPSAHL return to the countdown, along with KennyHoopla with Travis Barker. The one new new song comes from a little band named Imagine Dragons who found time between shooting Target commercials to release Follow You.

The top of the countdown held steady with Manchester Orchestra and Bed Head followed by some jostling among some familiar Alt18 tunes. The Happy Fits are up to No. 6 with Hold Me Down, and Grouplove creeped up to No. 12 with Deadline. Both seem like future No. 1 contenders, though I’d guess The Neighbourhood get at least a week at 1.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 3/27/21: Manchester Orchestra hits No. 1; The Band CAMINO and girl in red join

Phoebe Bridgers

For the third week in a row, there’s a new No. 1 on the Alt18 Countdown.

Manchester Orchestra took over the top spot with Bed Head, replacing All About You by The Knocks with Foster the People. It’s been a steady rise for the latest from Andy Hall, which debuted on the countdown on Feb. 28.

Two new songs joined the Alt18 this week. The Band CAMINO debuted at No. 18 with 1 Last Cigarette, and girl in red’s latest, Seratonin, came in at No. 15. Gus Dapperton also returned after a week away with Medicine.

To make room, Estella by KennyHoopla with Travis Barker, Vintage by Blu DeTiger, and Happy Endings by Mike Shinoda left the countdown. Deadline by Grouplove stuck around for a second week and seems destined for a long stay on the Alt18, though maybe not as long as Kilby Girl by The Backseat Lovers. The loving ode to the 19-year-old cool girl in Salt Lake City hung around for an 18th consecutive week — by far the longest on the countdown.

Phoebe Bridgers and Kyoto returned to the Alt18 last week and then jumped to No. 5 this week. Could it be the next No. 1? Or is The Neighbourhood poised to make it a fourth new No. 1 in four weeks with Stargazing?

The March 27, 2021 Alt18 Countdown and updated Spotify playlist are below. Updated YouTube list and notes on the songs later this week.
