Everything to know about ‘Telepath’ by Manchester Orchestra

Manchester Orchestra - image

Manchester Orchestra released “Telepath” on April 28, 2021. It debuted at No. 18 on SiriusXM’s Alt18 Countdown on August 28, 2021. Loma Vista Recordings released the song as the third, and final, single off the band’s album, “The Million Masks of God.”

Lead singer Andy Hull described the song as the “ebb and flow of life long commitment to another person.”

Isaac Deitz directed the accompanying video. Here’s an acoustic performance by Hull.

Huw Baines profiled the band and its new album on Guitar.com. Here’s an excerpt from the piece:

On their new record the band pick up one of A Black Mile to the Surface’s dangling threads and confront the full stop that’s up ahead in the distance for all of us. Guitarist Robert McDowell (who’s also Hull’s brother-in-law) lost his father to cancer in 2019, and his death reverberates throughout the monumental The Million Masks of God. “It was a very delicate time for everybody,” Hull continues. “Rob was in the thick of a storm. We were making this record during that. We were cautious and careful.

“The record was therapy for all of us”: Manchester Orchestra on the raw emotion at the heart of their new album, Guitar.com

Lyrics

In my mind, you are an old empty apartment
Sitting on your mother’s table next to you is her
Carving out our names into each piece of wood and concrete
Told her I don’t have a lot, babe, but you can have my soul

Baby, do you want me?
Baby, do you want me?
Baby, do you want me?
No, no, no

In your mind, this is some new and glorious morning
And you ain’t ever gonna let nobody take that light again
Everyone I know is slowly falling in the ocean
I don’t want to be the next to row, I never learned to swim

Baby, do you love me?
Baby, do you love me?
Baby, do you love me?
No, no, no

In my mind, you are the road I chose to travel
Might as well have been the very last thing I decide
Half the time I’m lost, afraid that you’re just borrowed
It don’t matter much to me, man, I’m not afraid to die

Baby, are you with me?
Do you forgive me?
You’re the one I wanted, want now, want when I am old
Baby, are you with me?
Do you forgive me?
You’re the one I wanted, want now, want when I am old

When I’m falling
When I’m falling

Everything to know about ‘It’s All Happening’ by Saint Motel

Poster image for It's All Happening by Saint Motel

Saint Motel released “It’s All Happening” on May 13, 2021 as part of the two-year rollout of its album “The Original Motion Soundtrack,” which dropped on June 25, 2021. The song is written by lead singer A/J Jackson and performed by the Los Angeles-based band, which includes: Aaron Sharp (guitar), Dak Lerdamornpong (bass) and Greg Erwin (drums). It joined the Alt18 Countdown on July 10, 2021 at No. 12. It rose to No. 3 on the August 28, 2021 Alt18. It reached No. 39 on the Billboard alternative chart and had more than 2 million plays on Spotify as of Aug. 31, 2021.

The band hasn’t done a lot of press for “It’s All Happening” or “The Original Motion Soundtrack.” They did undertake an ambitious live performance of the album on August 18, 2021 in Macedonia.

“It’s All Happening” follows up the band’s 2019 hit “Van Horn,” which was “The Original Motion Picture, Part 1,” and “A Good Song Never Dies,” which was on TOMPS, Vol. 2.

Lyrics

I came, I saw, I conquered, never got no prize
I went and faced my monsters, looked ’em straight in their eyes
Now look around, it’s beautiful as far as we can see
The past has turned to history and it’s all happening, finally

It’s happening
It’s happening
(It’s happening)Take five, take care, take cover, here comes our chance
Find time, find friends, find lovers, gotta make this last
Now look around, it’s beautiful as far as we can see
The past has turned to history and it’s all happening, finally

It’s happening
It’s happening
Finally
Finally
(It’s happening)

Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh

Everything to know about ‘Colorado’ by Milky Chance

Milky Chance released “Shy Away” on June 17, 2021. It debuted at No. 18 on SiriusXM’s Alt18 Countdown on July 3, 2021 and reached No. 2 on August 28, 2021. Berlin-based Muggelig Records GmbH, the band’s new imprint, released the song.

Clemens Rehbein told American Songwriter “Colorado” is about getting together with friends to cope with a hard time, if only for one night. “It’s very honest but also not taking itself too seriously at the same time,” Rehbein said.

Rehbein and collaborator Phillip Dausch wrote the song in about two hours during a break as they worked on something completely different. NME notes the overt drug references in the song: “I get high in Colorado.”

Lyrics

I get high like Colorado
We had it all but what do I know?
I try to push away the sorrow
But today, it’s too late, I try tomorrow
(Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah)

I think that you were kind of mean (kind of mean, kind of mean)
You just replaced me in the scene (in the scene, in the scene)
I thought that we were evergreen (evergreen, evergreen)
Like a never-ending dream

Never been on the TV
Scratched me off of your CV
Out of your mind
Out of your mind
Never been so uneasy
Jealousy got me freaky
Out of my mind

So I get high like Colorado
We had it all but what do I know?
I try to push away the sorrow
But today, it’s too late, I try tomorrow
(Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah)I’m losing sleep all by myself
I’m wide awake and I just wonder how
You put my heart back on the shelf (back on the shelf)
Well, I’ma be a loner now

Never been on the TV
Scratched me off of your CV
Out of your mind
Out of your mind
Never been so uneasy
Jealousy got me freaky
Out of my mind

So I get high like Colorado
We had it all but what do I know?
I try to push away the sorrow
But today, it’s too late, I try tomorrow
(Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah)Drownin’ in my sofa with my blood shot red eyes (ooh)
Ridin’ rollercoaster ’til I see the sunrise

I get high like Colorado (I get high, I get high)
We had it all but what do I know?
I try to push away the sorrow (I get high, I get high)
But today, it’s too late, I try tomorrow
(Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah)I get high like Colorado
Colorado (yeah), Colorado (yeah), Colorado
I get high like Colorado
Colorado (yeah), Colorado (yeah), Colorado

Everything to know about ‘Shy Away’ by Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots Shy Away

Twenty One Pilots released “Shy Away” on April 7, 2021 as the first single off of their sixth album “Scaled and Icy.” It debuted at No. 15 on SiriusXM’s Alt18 Countdown on April 10, 2021, jumped to No. 2 the next week and reached No. 1 on May 8, 2021. Fueled by Ramen released the song.

Tyler Joseph told the BBC he wrote the song for his younger brother. It started as a tutorial in the recording studio and grew into advice for his sibling. It also includes unintentional background vocals from Joseph’s 1-year-old daughter at the start of the song, which is one example of the pandemic’s influence on the band’s creative process. Joseph and bandmate Josh Dun worked remotely with Joseph doing the writing and producing and Dun providing drum tracks.

The track is being well received.

Tyler Golsen in Far Out rated the album a 7.6 out of 10 and applauded the group for continuing in the vein of 2020’s “Level of Concern,” another Alt18 No. 1 song. Michael Davies in the Harvard Crimson called the song a “litmus test” for the band’s move to “upbeat, electronic pop style.”

Twenty One Pilots “Shy Away” debuted at No. 20 on Billboard’s US alternative chart and hit No. 1 on May 1, 2021. It’s in the Top 100 on charts around the world.

Lyrics

When I get home
You better not be there, we’re placing bets you won’t
Shed your modesty
And the only thing to leave behind is your own skin
On the floor

Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that’s never heard
Don’t you (sh)When you get home
You barely recognize the pictures they put in a frame
‘Cause you shed your modesty
Don’t circle the track
Take what you have
And leave your skin on the floor

Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that’s never heard

When I get home
Boy, you better not be there, you’re long gone
Shed your modesty
Don’t circle the track
Just break the cycle in half
And leave your skin on the floor

Don’t you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an “I love you” (ooh, ooh)
That isn’t words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote
That’s never heard
That’s never heard

And I love you
There isn’t words
Like a song he wrote
That’s never heard
Don’t you shy away

Siriux XM Alt 18 Countdown of alternative music, Jan. 9, 2021 | Sir Sly at No. 1; Almost Monday joins with ‘Broken People’

Inhaler looking cool.

Almost Monday joined the Alt18 this week with “Broken People,” which was released in October 2019 and has already racked up millions of plays on the different platforms. Clairo returns to the Alt18 with “Sofia,” and Ashe’s “Save Me” is other new addition this week. That sends Mishaal’s “Peddle Bike,” the Foo Fighters “Shame, Shame” and grandson’s “Dirty” off the countdown. With all that change over, Sir Sly is left on top with “Material Boy.”

Siriux XM Alt 18 Countdown of alternative music, Jan. 2, 2021 | New ones from The Knocks, Inhaler, Mishaal; MISSIO at No. 1

Australia’s Mansionair

We’re back to the regular Alt18 Countdown after last week’s Alt36 of 2020. Justin Kade filled in for Madison during the holiday week. The countdown kicked off 2021 with four new songs, including a new one from Royal and the Serpent, plus songs from Inhaler, Mishaal and The Knocks. From there it was back to where things left off in 2020 with the same Top 2 songs from the Dec. 19 countdown. Tame Impala made the biggest jump, moving up 12 spots with “Is It True,” which appeared to be heading out after a lengthy run. It’s back up to No. 3.

Jake Bugg, Clairo, Cannons, Ashe and USERx all fell off. I’d expect to see Bugg and Ashe back soon; USERx’s “Waterman” has also returned and is getting some play on AltNation.

Happy New Year!

Ashe

It’s the last Alt18 Countdown of 2020, and it’s pretty much a hold steady for the list. Jake Bugg (!) returns with a promising new song, “All I Need.” Hopefully this mean more new material from the British songwriter in 2021.

MISSIO climbs to No. 1 with “Can You Feel the Sun?” knocking off Bastille and “survivin'” Royal Blood, AJR and Black Belt Eagle Scout all fall off the list this week. Royal Blood’s “Trouble Coming” drops off for the first time since joining on Oct. 18.

“Tangerine” by Glass Animals, “Material Boy” by Sir Sly and “Is It True” by Tame Impala are the longest-running songs on the current countdown. All joined the list on Oct. 4.

SiriusXM released its “Class of 2020” this week. Alt18 bands Cannons, Phoebe Bridgers, Powfu, Wallows, Ashe and Clairo were part of the collection.

Next week they’ll run the “Alt36 of 2020” in place of the normal countdown, and then we’re off to 2021.

Bastille’s Dan Smith (creative commons)

Big week for grandson, who jumps 12 spots to No. 5 after the release of his album, “Death of an Optimist.” (Prediction: “In Over My Head” off the album is headed to the Alt18 next year.) MISSIO comes so close to the top spot, but falls short to another week at No. 1 for Bastille and “survivin'”

Billie Eilish remains in the Top 5, but this week Alt18 pulled used her live performance of “Therefore I am” on AltNation. Nice, sinister version of the song. And, The Backseat Lovers reach No. 3 after “Kilby Girl” fell out of the Alt18 a couple of weeks ago.

Black Belt Eagle Scout joins the Alt18 at No. 18, replacing Paris Jackson. Ashe’s “Save Myself” also joins the countdown. Royal and the Serpent, Gus Dapperton and Cage the Elephant fall off, but could easily return as proven by AJR’s “Bummerland” making a comeback.

Siriux XM Alt 18 Countdown of alternative music, Dec. 5, 2020 | Paris Jackson, Bleachers with Bruce Springsteen join; Bastille reclaims No. 1

The Backseat Lovers loving life.

Rock royalty is on the Alt18 Countdown these days, first with Foo Fighters and now the great Bruce Springsteen. The Boss teamed up with Jack Antonoff and Bleachers for “chinatown,” which debuted at No. 15 this week.

Madison returned this week and so did Gus Dapperton to the Alt18 with “Post Humorous” (something she noted herself). Clairo is also back with “Sofia.”

Paris Jackson — yes, Michael’s daughter — joins the countdown at No. 18 with “Let Down.” Billie Eilish climbed one with “There I Am” after appearing on AltNation for an interview and performance, including a cover of The Beatles, “Something.” Her brother Finneas didn’t fare as well. His “Can’t Wait to Be Dead” dropped off, along with “Guillotine” by Mansionair and NoMBe and “Our Song” by Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

The Countdown also said goodbye to Cannons and “Fire For You” after 16 weeks on the Alt18.

Former Alt18 song “Monsters” by All Time Low featuring Blackbear finished its 12th week as the most-played alternative song on the Billboard alternative charts dating back to Sept. 12, 2020. Checkout a new version of the song featuring Demi Lovato.
