Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 9/4/21: Bastille tops, The Happy Fits join

Another week of swapping places on and off theAlt18 Countdown. Sir Sly, Cold War Kids, Foo Fighters, Holly Humberstone and Atlas Genius all had songs return this week after some time off. They replace Alt18 stalwarts Glass Animals, Modest Mouse and The Killers, among others.

Over on the Finding Alt18 Discord the group voted Saint Motel’s “It’s All Happening” the People’s Champ Song of the Week, but it fell completely off the countdown.

The Marias are new to the Alt18 this week with “Hush,” while The Happy Fits give the countdown another try with “Another Try.” Up at the top, it’s Bastille again at No. 1, followed by Milky Chance’s “Colorado” and Måneskin’s “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE.”

CHVRCHES notably fell off the list this week with former No. 1 “He Said, She Said,” but joined with “Good Girls.”

Thank you to FastrThnU for posting the Alt18 on Discord this weekend while I was out in the woods.

Prediction for next week: Modest Mouse is back with a new song, Twenty Pilots moves up, and maybe we get Bakar back?

Here’s the AltCharts countdown on Spotify.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 8/28/21: Milky Chance jumps to No. 2; The Killers, Dayglow join

Ian Johnson, Arrested Youth

Twenty One Pilots was coming and going on the new Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM.

The duo’s “Saturday” fell off the Alt18 but their “The Outside” took its place, debuting at No. 8. This is the third song off their new album “Scaled and Icy” to make the countdown. “Shy Away” had a run earlier this year.

It’s also good days if you’re a Killers fan. The band dropped a second album, “Pressure Machine,” in less than a year and “Sleepwalker” joined the Alt18 this week. Brandon Flowers and co. lived on the countdown last year and appear ready to take up residency for the rest of 2021.

Dayglow brings the third new new song this week with “Medicine.” Another great song off “Harmony House,” Sloan Struble continues to build on his 2020 success of “Can I See You Tonight.” He had “Close to You” on the countdown earlier this year.

Returning this week are SEB’s “seaside_demo,” along with “Wrecked” by Imagine Dragons and “Stop Making this Hurt” by Bleachers. Of the three, SEB was least likely to jump back in, but also the nicest surprise.

Those six songs knocked off a mix of old and new. We mentioned “Saturday,” and “Welcomes the Pressure” by Sir Sly continues to yo-yo on and off the Alt18. The biggest surprise is Holly Humberstone’s “The Walls are Way to Thin,” which was flirting with No. 1 a couple of weeks ago. Lorde’s run with “Solar Power” may be over, Cannons and “Bad Dream” had been hanging around, and you could easily see Cold War Kids back next week with “What You Say.”

Bastille is back at No. 1 with “Distorted Light Beam,” while Milky Chance jumped to No. 2 with “Colorado.” I like Måneskin’s chances at No. 4, and Saint Motel reached No. 3 with “It’s All Happening.” Arrested Youth’s “Find My Way,” featuring Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, is at No. 11. In some industry synergy, they’re touring with Twenty One Pilots this year.

I’m starting a new thing on the Discord channel where members can vote for their favorite song of the week. This week’s “People’s Champ” is the earworm “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE.” Vote this week over in the Finding Alt18 Discord (and check out some incredibly cool data on the history of pop music).

Here’s the AltCharts countdown on Spotify.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 8/21/21: Manchester Orchestra joins with ‘Telepath’

Cold War Kids

Bastille is back at No. 1 this week on the Alt18 Countdown with the haunting “Distorted Light Beam.” Can you make sense of these opening lyrics?

It isn’t enough to start a riot
Distort the light beam until I like me
It isn’t enough, if this is real life
I’ll stick to dreaming, come see what I see

Catchy chorus, though.

UPDATE: Here’s a good analysis of the lyrics. Thanks, SlaX from Discord.

Måneskin continues their rise up the countdown with “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE” reaching No. 5. Twenty One Pilots, Modest Mouse and Glass Animals continue shuffling among the Top 5, while Sir Sly continues to bounce up and down the Alt18 with “Welcome the Pressure.”

Manchester Orchestra appears ready for another long stay on the countdown with the excellent “Telepath” joining at No. 15.

Vance Joy is back with “Missing Piece,” Billie Eilish with “NDA,” Walk the Moon with “Can You Handle My Love??” and Saint Motel with “It’s All Happening.” Justus Bennetts, The Band CAMINO, Foo Fighters, Bleachers and Atlas Genius all drop off this week.
