Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/10/21: The Neighbourhood reaches No. 1; Twenty One Pilots and All Time Low join

Imagine Dragons

The climb is complete for The Neighbourhood and “Stargazing,” which is the new No. 1 on the Alt18 Countdown. ChipTone and crew knocked off Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” for the weekly title. The Knocks and Foster the People round out the Top 3 with “All ABout You.”

Two new songs on the Alt18 this week. Twenty One Pilots joins with “Shy Away” at No. 15, and All Time Low is back with “Once in a Lifetime.” The knocked off Blu DeTiger’s “Vintage” and Dayglow’s “Close to You.”

The Happy Fits jumped up to No. 4 and seem poised to reach No. 1, though girl in red is getting a lot of attention with “Serotonin.” Either is going to have hold off rising hits from TOP and Grouplove. We’ll see as this turnover phase continues for the countdown.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/3/21: Blu DeTiger returns; Manchester Orchestra repeates; Kilby Girl departs

Grouplove. Photo credit: Jimmy Fontaine

It’s over, it’s all over for the mighty Kilby Girl by The Backseat Lovers. The last 2020 Alt18 Countdown song fell off the list this week after 18 consecutive weeks. Great run by a great song; looking forward to the Salt Lake City band’s followup.

Lots of turnover on this week’s Alt18. Blu DeTiger and Mike Shinoda with iann dior and UPSAHL return to the countdown, along with KennyHoopla with Travis Barker. The one new new song comes from a little band named Imagine Dragons who found time between shooting Target commercials to release Follow You.

The top of the countdown held steady with Manchester Orchestra and Bed Head followed by some jostling among some familiar Alt18 tunes. The Happy Fits are up to No. 6 with Hold Me Down, and Grouplove creeped up to No. 12 with Deadline. Both seem like future No. 1 contenders, though I’d guess The Neighbourhood get at least a week at 1.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 3/27/21: Manchester Orchestra hits No. 1; The Band CAMINO and girl in red join

Phoebe Bridgers

For the third week in a row, there’s a new No. 1 on the Alt18 Countdown.

Manchester Orchestra took over the top spot with Bed Head, replacing All About You by The Knocks with Foster the People. It’s been a steady rise for the latest from Andy Hall, which debuted on the countdown on Feb. 28.

Two new songs joined the Alt18 this week. The Band CAMINO debuted at No. 18 with 1 Last Cigarette, and girl in red’s latest, Seratonin, came in at No. 15. Gus Dapperton also returned after a week away with Medicine.

To make room, Estella by KennyHoopla with Travis Barker, Vintage by Blu DeTiger, and Happy Endings by Mike Shinoda left the countdown. Deadline by Grouplove stuck around for a second week and seems destined for a long stay on the Alt18, though maybe not as long as Kilby Girl by The Backseat Lovers. The loving ode to the 19-year-old cool girl in Salt Lake City hung around for an 18th consecutive week — by far the longest on the countdown.

Phoebe Bridgers and Kyoto returned to the Alt18 last week and then jumped to No. 5 this week. Could it be the next No. 1? Or is The Neighbourhood poised to make it a fourth new No. 1 in four weeks with Stargazing?

The March 27, 2021 Alt18 Countdown and updated Spotify playlist are below. Updated YouTube list and notes on the songs later this week.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 3/20/21: Foster the Knocks hit No. 1; The Backseat Lovers continue their run; Grouplove and Mike Shinoda join

AJR
AJR is back near top of the Alt18.

A new No. 1 with the All About You collab from The Knocks and Foster the People supplanting Dayglow’s Close To You.

Two new new songs on the countdown this week: Happy Endings from Mike Shinoda with iann dior and UPSAHL, and Deadline from Grouplove. Phoebe Bridgers also returns to the Alt18 with Kyoto. They replaced Gus Dapperton and Medicine, nothing, nowhere and fake friend, and JayXander and HOODIES.

The Backseat Lovers continue their charmed run with Kilby Girl, which has stayed on the countdown since Nov. 22, 2020. To put that in perspective, the second-longest running song on the countdown is grandson’s Dirty, which joined the Alt18 two months after Kilby Girl.

Alt18 Countdown, 3/20/21

18. Mike Shinoda/iann dior/UPSAHL, Happy Endings
Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda released this track in February as a NFT. It’s new to the Alt18 this week.

17. Clairo, Sofia
Another week at No. 17 Clairo and Sofia. Coupdemain suggests Claire Cottrill’s Instagram is documenting working on a second Clairo album. Let’s hope.

16. Kings of Leon, The Bandit
Another week at No. 16 for the lads, who also got in on the NFT action. We were chatting about Kings this week on the Finding Alt18 Discord.

15. Grouplove, Deadline
New one from Hannah, Christian and the gang. Love that scream rap refrain. This is off their new 9-song album, This is This.

14. Phoebe Bridgers, Kyoto
One of those random rejoins the Alt18 mixes into the countdown these days. No complaints about anything from Phoebe Bridgers, though. Here’s her explanation on those skeleton costumes.

13. Blu DeTiger, Vintage
Checkout her TikTok — so good.

12. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
Travis Barker and Mike Shinoda both on the Alt18. What’s Sum 41 up to these days?

11. Weezer, All My Favorite Songs
Weezer has four new albums in the works.

10. The Neighbourhood, Stargazing
Their Insta features Chip Chrome and the MonoTones.

9. grandson, Dirty
Down seven this week for the former No. 1, which has been on the countdown since Jan. 21, 2021.

8. carolesdaughter, Violent
She really is Carole’s daughter.

7. The Backseat Lovers, Kilby Girl
Look for the BSL at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas this September — if we can get this pandemic under control. Get your shot! Wear your mask!

6. Foo Fighters, Waiting on a War
Waiting. on a War hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Air Play charts this week. Here’s the link, but it’s paywalled.

5. The Happy Fits, Hold Me Down
I got an email last week that The Happy Fits are signed to the mighty AWAL Records, and I should have known that. Here’s The Garden from a band on this rise. And email me anytime at finding.alt18@gmail.com to correct mistakes.

4. Manchester Orchestra, Bed Head

3. AJR, Way Less Sad
Nice jump into the countdown’s Top 3 for another pandemic anthem from the boys.

2. Dayglow, Close To You
One-week reign for this bop. I love this Reddit quote: “Big golden retriever energy from this.”

1. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You
Surprise No. 1 for a great song jumping from seven to the spot. These are fun days not knowing who is going to land in the top spot. I’m call this collab Foster the Knocks and hoping for a tour next year. Let’s goooooo!

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 3/13/21: Dayglow is the new No. 1; JayXander and Blu DeTiger join

Blu DeTiger

We have a new No. 1! Dayglow unseats grandson’s “Dirty” with “Close To You.” It’s the first new song to top the countdown in five weeks and completes a meteoric rise up the Alt18 for Sloan Struble, who jumped 14 spots last week.

New to the countdown this week include: Blu DeTiger’s Vintage and JayXander’s HOODIE. Clairo also returned with “Sofia.” Those three knocked off Frances Forever’s Space Girl, Sir Sly’s Material Boy and You by benny blanco, Marshmello and Vance Joy.

The Backseat Lovers continue their Alt18 run. Kilby Girl has been the countdown since Nov. 22, 2020.

Quick note on last week: I had the wrong date on the countdown and heard from one newsletter reader about it. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks to anyone who reaches out and points out a mistake. I’m working without an editor here and make too many mistakes.

Also, no Adjacent18 after I had a busy week and the lack of change on the countdown left me uninspired. I’ll get back to it this week. Have any suggestions for songs adjacent to any on the Alt18? I’d take suggestions.

Alt18 Countdown, 3/13/21

18. JayXander, HOODIES
New to the Alt18 Countdown this week, and pretty new to Spotify. JayXander has two songs on his Spotify account: Ig This Is It, and HOODIES, which has already passed 3 million listens. Here’s a bit more on the artist on the rise.

17. Clairo, Sofia
Clairo and Sofia return to the countdown once again. No complaints here. If you keep score by Spotify plays, this song is now incredibly over 220 million and counting.

16. Kings of Leon, The Bandit
Down five this week.

15. Blu DeTiger, Vintage
The song is on brand for Gen Y, which the NY Times says is rejecting “fast fashion” in favor of the used clothing market.

14. nothing,nowhere, fake friend
One of my favorite songs on the Alt18 these days.

13. The Backseat Lovers, Kilby Girl
Another week on the Alt18 for the Salt Lake City band, which joined the countdown in November. Down seven this week, though.

12. carolesdaughter, Violent
This tune continues to gain traction in the alternative music world.

11. Gus Dapperton, Medicine
GDapp will perform one of 30 shows for The Bowery Presents on Twitch this spring. Hopefully this is the final push of virtual shows before in-person concerts return this summer. Wear your mask! Get the shot!

10. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
I try my best to honor capitalization and punctuation used by the artists, but I can’t find an explanation for those slashes

9. The Happy Fits, Hold Me Down
The band appears to be truly independent, releasing this now hit song on The Happy Fits Records.

8. AJR, Way Less Sad
The Harvard Crimson likes this one.

7. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You
Mark Foster and The Knocks should just form a band already. Listen to their new cover of Bittersweet Symphony and set aside a few dollars for the inevitable Foster the Knocks tour coming soon.

6. Manchester Orchestra, Bed Head
Bed Head was released by Loma Vista Recordings.

5. Weezer, All My Favorite Songs
Weezer will have a song on the The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run soundtrack.

4. The Neighbourhood, Stargazing
Their Insta features Chip Chrome and the MonoTones.

3. Foo Fighters, Waiting on a War

2. grandson, Dirty
The champ is dethroned after five weeks. Now, when does the MISSIO collab come out?

1. Dayglow, Close To You
Two weeks ago, Madison predicted this song will make it to No. 1. The Sloan Struble-tune jumped 14 spots last week and here it is in the top spot.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 3/6/21: Dayglow jumps; grandson makes it 5 weeks in a row; The Neigbourhood moves to No. 3

Sloan Struble is Dayglow.

Wow, almost no changes in the Alt18 Countdown this week save some reshuffling. The only song to leave this week was C’est La Vie by The Killers, and it was replaced by Alt18 stalwart Material Boy by Sir Sly. Usually we’ll get some new artists in the high teens to shake things up, but not this week. Dayglow’s 14-spot jump to No. 4 for Close to You is the biggest change of the week.

18. Frances Forever, Space Girl
Down six this week for Frances Forever, who released a video for their charming piece of pop perfection.

17. benny blanco, Marshmello, Vance Joy, You
The trio released an acoustic version of You this week. Listen to it here.

16. nothing,nowhere, fake friend
This was my vote this week after going back through nothing, nowhere’s past albums. Pitchfork like’s Joe Mulherin’s new album.

15. carolesdaughter, Violent
Thea Taylor, daughter of Carole, released Violent on Arista Records.

14. The Happy Fits, Hold Me Down
The band created a playlist of their influences. Check them out!

13. AJR, Way Less Sad

12. Gus Dapperton, Medicine
GD talks here about the conflict between being an introvert who takes on the role of extrovert during performances. It’s a tough time on the road in 2018 that led him to write Medicine.

11. Kings of Leon, The Bandit
See KoL on Stephen Colbert here. The band announced this week it would sell its new album as an NFT. It’s an interesting possible future for recording artists, but also a real threat to the environment.

10. Sir Sly, Material Boy
Sir Sly and Glass Animals have similar — and cool — websites.

9. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
KH is hopeful for live shows in 2021. He has two dates scheduled in London this summer opening for Yungblud.

8. Manchester Orchestra, Bed Head
The lyrics to this song go: “Blood on the bed head and volumes you left unsaid / Let ’em talk and let it habit, now I’m afraid you’re alone.” And I thought Andy Hull just needed a comb.

7. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You
Like The Knocks? Check out this release with Purple Disco Machine.

Kilby Girl has been on the Alt18 Countdown since Nov. 22, 2020.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 2/27/21: grandson repeats, The Knocks jump and Dayglow joins

carolesdaughter
carolesdaughter

Steady as she goes on this week’s Alt17 Countdown on Sirius XM. We saw new songs from Dayglow (Close To You), AJR (Way Less Sad), and Manchester Orchestra (Bed Head), and said adieu to MISSIO (Can You Feel the Sun), BENEE (Happen to Me), and Machine Gun Kelly’s (ex’s best friend). nothing, nowhere returned to the countdown with Fake Friend.

grandson repeats at No. 1 with Dirty, and The Knocks with Foster the People say a nice jump to No. 3. Foo Fighters and Weezer hung around, and Gus Dapperton kept his Alt18 run going with Medicine.

This week is the first time we didn’t hear MISSIO on the Countdown since Oct. 24, 2020. That leaves All About You as the longest-tenured song on the countdown — and the countdown has moved entirely into 2021. (Nope. Kilby Girl has been on the countdown since Nov. 22, 2020.)

Along with this blog, here’s a few channels I’m keeping updated:

Alt18 Countdown, 2/20/21

18. Dayglow, Close To You (new)
Madison predicted this song will make it to No. 1. Atwood Magazine goes deep on the song.

17. The Killers, C’est La Vie
Last week on the #Adjacent18 we linked this one to early Talking Heads. Check it out for yourself — it’s spot on.

16. AJR, Way Less Sad (new)
It’s almost not an Alt18 Countdown these days without AJR. You’ll find this on their upcoming album, OK ORCHESTRA. Another play on Radiohead’s classic. Weezer’s new album is OK Human.

15. Manchester Orchestra, Bed Head (new)

14. benny blanco, Marshmello, Vance Joy, You
Billboard calls this one a “folk-meets-the-dance-floor tune.”

13. Frances Forever, Space Girl
The caller introduction voted for this song because LGBTQ representation matters — and because it’s a great song. Truth on both.

12. nothing,nowhere, Fake Friend
N,N creator Joe Mulherin collaborated with fellow countdown mate KennyHoopla on blood.

11. The Happy Fits, Hold Me Down
Calvin Langman linked this song to fellow New Jersey rockers Sonic Blume.

10. carolesdaughter, Violent
Thea Taylor found her stage name in rehab after realizing how often she talked about her mom, Carole.

9. The Backseat Lovers, Kilby Girl
The caller introducing this song connected to the Kilby Court, the longest-running all-ages concert venue in Salt Lake City.

8. KennyHoopla/Travis Barker, ESTELLA//
Travis Barker is going to be around a long time working with acts like KennyHoopla, Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd.

7. Weezer, All My Favorite Songs
Weezer committed to full analog for their new album, OK Human, including a full orchestra. It’s good to be Weezer.

6. The Neighbourhood, Stargazing
Jaden Smith, Mac Demarco, Lana Del Rey and Alexa Demie all cameo in this song’s video.

5. Kings of Leon, The Bandit
The Bandit hit No. 1 on the Billboard adult alternative chart on Feb. 20.

4. Gus Dapperton, Medicine
GD wrote and produced this song with Spike Stent, a legendary producer and mix engineer who has worked with seemingly every major recording artist over the past 30 years. Seriously, Google him.

3. The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You

2. Foo Fighters, Waiting on a War
