Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 9/11/21: Milky Chance is No. 1 with ‘Colorado’

Walk the Moon

It’s always interesting when Madison goes on vacation. A week after the Alt18 Countdown saw pretty significant changes with host Madison out, it snapped back with seven new or returning songs joining the weekly alt chart.

But let’s start at the top, where we have a new No. 1. Milky Chance’s catchy “Colorado” swaps spots with Bastille’s “Distorted Light Beam” to become the 10th song to take the top spot on the countdown in 2021.

Måneskin held at No. 3, CHVRCHES cruised up to No. 4 with “Good Girl,” and Twenty One Pilots rounded out the Top 5 with “The Outside.”

Now things get a little topsy-turvy. “Elegant Stranger” by Atlas Genius dropped off after hitting No. 5 last week, while Saint Motel returned at No. 6 after “It’s All Happening” dropped off the countdown last week. It seems to have replaced Vance Joy and “Missing Piece,” which fell off the countdown, as did The Happy Fits and “Another Try.”

Manchester Orchestra’s “Telepath” reached No. 8. It’s also the People’s Champ Song of the Week, as voted by the Finding Alt18 Discord (join here!).

The Foo Fighters, SEB, Arrested Youth, and Sir Sly fell off the countdown. The Killers returned and The Marias moved up to No. 11 with “Hush.”

Here’s the AltCharts countdown on Spotify. And YouTube.

Want to see how I knew “Colorado” is the 10th new No. 1? Check out our community spreadsheet here.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 9/4/21: Bastille tops, The Happy Fits join

Vance Joy

Another week of swapping places on and off theAlt18 Countdown. Sir Sly, Cold War Kids, Foo Fighters, Holly Humberstone and Atlas Genius all had songs return this week after some time off. They replace Alt18 stalwarts Glass Animals, Modest Mouse and The Killers, among others.

Over on the Finding Alt18 Discord the group voted Saint Motel’s “It’s All Happening” the People’s Champ Song of the Week, but it fell completely off the countdown.

The Marias are new to the Alt18 this week with “Hush,” while The Happy Fits give the countdown another try with “Another Try.” Up at the top, it’s Bastille again at No. 1, followed by Milky Chance’s “Colorado” and Måneskin’s “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE.”

CHVRCHES notably fell off the list this week with former No. 1 “He Said, She Said,” but joined with “Good Girls.”

Thank you to FastrThnU for posting the Alt18 on Discord this weekend while I was out in the woods.

Prediction for next week: Modest Mouse is back with a new song, Twenty Pilots moves up, and maybe we get Bakar back?

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 8/28/21: Milky Chance jumps to No. 2; The Killers, Dayglow join

Ian Johnson, Arrested Youth

Twenty One Pilots was coming and going on the new Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM.

The duo’s “Saturday” fell off the Alt18 but their “The Outside” took its place, debuting at No. 8. This is the third song off their new album “Scaled and Icy” to make the countdown. “Shy Away” had a run earlier this year.

It’s also good days if you’re a Killers fan. The band dropped a second album, “Pressure Machine,” in less than a year and “Sleepwalker” joined the Alt18 this week. Brandon Flowers and co. lived on the countdown last year and appear ready to take up residency for the rest of 2021.

Dayglow brings the third new new song this week with “Medicine.” Another great song off “Harmony House,” Sloan Struble continues to build on his 2020 success of “Can I See You Tonight.” He had “Close to You” on the countdown earlier this year.

Returning this week are SEB’s “seaside_demo,” along with “Wrecked” by Imagine Dragons and “Stop Making this Hurt” by Bleachers. Of the three, SEB was least likely to jump back in, but also the nicest surprise.

Those six songs knocked off a mix of old and new. We mentioned “Saturday,” and “Welcomes the Pressure” by Sir Sly continues to yo-yo on and off the Alt18. The biggest surprise is Holly Humberstone’s “The Walls are Way to Thin,” which was flirting with No. 1 a couple of weeks ago. Lorde’s run with “Solar Power” may be over, Cannons and “Bad Dream” had been hanging around, and you could easily see Cold War Kids back next week with “What You Say.”

Bastille is back at No. 1 with “Distorted Light Beam,” while Milky Chance jumped to No. 2 with “Colorado.” I like Måneskin’s chances at No. 4, and Saint Motel reached No. 3 with “It’s All Happening.” Arrested Youth’s “Find My Way,” featuring Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, is at No. 11. In some industry synergy, they’re touring with Twenty One Pilots this year.

I’m starting a new thing on the Discord channel where members can vote for their favorite song of the week. This week’s “People’s Champ” is the earworm “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE.” Vote this week over in the Finding Alt18 Discord (and check out some incredibly cool data on the history of pop music).

Here’s the AltCharts countdown on Spotify.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 5/15/21: Modest Mouse and Coldplay join; Glass Animals rise; Twenty One Pilots hold at No. 1

Black Pumas (Creative Commons – Credit: Dave Hensley)

Some old play on the Alt18 Countdown this week with Modest Mouse and Coldplay both making debuts. MM is back with We Are Between, while Coldplay joins with Higher Power.

No change in the Top 2 with Twenty One Pilots holding at the top with “Shy Away,” while Manchester Orchestra follows with “Bed Head.”

Here’s a little countdown trivia. There have been nine No. 1 songs on the Alt18 in 2021. How many can you name? Answers posted later this week. I missed one before going back to check the blog.

Dropping off this week: Royal Blood and Typhoons, Mike Shinoda, iann dior, and UPSAHL with Happy Endings, AJR and Way Less Sad, and SHAED with Two Feet’s Part Time Psycho.

Blog Update

A few updates on the blog:

First, I’ll keep updating the Alt18 list each week, but the Spotify playlist is dead. I’m not even allowed to rename playlists anymore. That said, I created a new one that I’ll update with a variety of alternative bands on different countdowns. You can follow My Playlist #84 here. It’ll be a mix of familiar, past, and upcoming songs in the spirit of the countdown.

Second, it does appear the Pandora playlist below is updating on some kind of delayed schedule. If you want the official countdown, that’s the source of truth.

Third, I updated the YouTube playlist with “Finding Alt” songs on current alternative music charts, including the Alt18, Billboard, the New Alternative 40 Chart, etc.

Finally, Doug D. who reads the blog shared old countdowns that I’m getting into a searchable spreadsheet for anyone who wants to geek out on past Alt18s. For example, the No. 1 song this week in 2010 was “Giving Up the Gun” by Vampire Weekend. Thank you, Doug!

We’re in a groove right now with the Top 4 in the Alt18 Countdown.

Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” took the No. 1 spot for another week, followed by Twenty One Pilots and “Shy Away” at No. 2, The Neighbourhood with “Stargazing” at No. 3, and girl in red with “Serotonin.” Manchester Orchestra (“Telepath”) and TOP (“Choker”) have new new songs out, so both appear ready to settle in for lengthy stays on the countdown.

Glass Animals, kings of the 2020 Alt18, jumped to No. 5 this week with “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” and AJR rolls on at No. 6 with “Way Less Sad.”

Two new songs joined the countdown this week: Joywave with “After Coffee” at the revolving door of No. 18, and Alice Merton with the strong debut at No. 11 with “Vertigo.” I’d bet on Merton putting down some roots in the countdown with her new earworm.

Weezer hangs on for another week with “All My Favorite Songs” at No. 9, and they’re readying for another single with the very Weezer-sounding “I Need Some of That.”

(All of these songs have me thinking about another post this week called the “Next18” featuring what’s next from our favorite Alt18 bands. I’m tinkering with another idea where we create our own alternative music countdown using a mix of existing lists and audience votes. We’ll see.)

The other new song this week is an Alt18 oldie. “Kilby Girl” by The Backseat Lovers returned for at least a week at No. 13. The three new songs knocked off carolesdaughter, Adam Melchor, and TWIN XL.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/24/21: Twin XL, Glass Animals among four new bands on this week’s countdown

TWIN XL

What a week! Four brand new songs, plus two old songs returning, to knock off some stalwarts on the Alt18 Countdowns this week.

Adam Melchor, Twin XL, Chvrches, and Glass Animals all join the countdown, while carolesdaughter and Mike Shinoda, iann dior and UPSAHL return. Those six knocked former No. 1’s “Dirty” by Grandson and “All About You” by The Knocks and Foster the People. Also dropping off: “Deadline” by Grouplove, “The Bandit” by Kings of Leon, “4Runner” by Rostam and “Waiting on a War” by Foo Fighters.

It all amounts to a big week of turnover, though nothing changed at the top. Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” continue to roll, while Twenty One Pilots wait their turn and The Neighbourhood round out the Top 3.

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/17/21: Manchester Orchestra back on top; Twenty One Pilots jump 13

All Time Low

No. 2 with a bullet this week for Twenty One Pilots, who are wasting no time flexing their way up the countdown with “Shy Away.” The latest from Tyler Joseph and Nick Thomas jumped 13 spots this week and seems ready to dig in for a lengthy stay on the Alt18 Countdown.

For now, Manchester Orchestra holds the top spot with “Bed Head.” It’s a return to No. 1 for the Atlanta-based band led by Andy Hull. They’d lost No. 1 to The Neighbourhood last week.

New new to the countdown this week is Rostam with the excellent “4Runner.” Returning to the countdown after some time off is Blu DeTiger with “Vintage” and The Band CAMINO with two missed calls and “1 Last Cigarette.” They replace carolesdaughter, Gus Dapperton and Mike Shinoda, et al.

The longest running song on the countdown is now “All About You” by The Knocks and Foster the People. I love the lyrics on this song:

Days, they can feel so long
I’ve been hangin’ on to a sad love song
Nights never came to dawn
They went on and on
When you pulled me out

And before I knew it
I became all about you

The Knocks/Foster the People, All About You

grandson is next with “Dirty.” I’m hoping he can pull a Glass Animals and swap the banger “Death of an Optimist” into the Alt18 for “Dirty,” but we’ll see if he has that kind of pull.

What’s your favorite song on the countdown these days? Any bands we should all know about? Share them in the comments or email: finding.alt18@gmail.com

Alt18 Countdown on Sirius XM, 4/10/21: The Neighbourhood reaches No. 1; Twenty One Pilots and All Time Low join

Imagine Dragons

The climb is complete for The Neighbourhood and “Stargazing,” which is the new No. 1 on the Alt18 Countdown. ChipTone and crew knocked off Manchester Orchestra and “Bed Head” for the weekly title. The Knocks and Foster the People round out the Top 3 with “All ABout You.”

Two new songs on the Alt18 this week. Twenty One Pilots joins with “Shy Away” at No. 15, and All Time Low is back with “Once in a Lifetime.” The knocked off Blu DeTiger’s “Vintage” and Dayglow’s “Close to You.”

The Happy Fits jumped up to No. 4 and seem poised to reach No. 1, though girl in red is getting a lot of attention with “Serotonin.” Either is going to have hold off rising hits from TOP and Grouplove. We’ll see as this turnover phase continues for the countdown.
